8. Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher














Common Name – Scissor-tailed Flycatcher
Scientific Name – Tyrannus forficatus
Range – This bird can be found from eastern Colorado/Nebraska south to Texas/Louisiana.  In the winter they will fly south to Florida or south of the border.
Habitat – They like mostly open country, roadsides, and ranches.  You can often find them perched on a telephone wire or on a fence like in this picture.
Unique Characteristics or Habits – Their chirp sounds like “kee-kee-kee-kee”.  During courtship the males will perform dances in the sky that sometimes include a backward summersault.
